Stone Pine
Pinus pinea
Tall, perennial tree which grows to approximately 10-15m in height. After about 6 years the trees start producing broad, oval cones which contain up to 50 edible pine nuts. Suits cooler conditions.
Sold as seedlings approximately 15-20cm high.
The (Italian) Stone Pine (or Umbrella Pine) is a species of pine native of Southern Europe in the Mediterranean region. This tree has been grown for its edible pine nuts since prehistoric times. It is also a widespread horticultural tree, besides being cultivated for the seeds.
