Rosella
Hibiscus sabdariffa
Rosella is an annual shrub which grows to about 1.5m with beautiful yellow hibiscus - like flowers. These plants are easy to grow in warm climates and thrive in a rich, well drained soil. Mulch is always beneficial as plenty of water is needed to keep them growing well. With the right conditions, you can begin harvesting in about 3 months. The calyx (fleshy outer covering of the seed pods) is used to flavour jam, wine or cordial. Once dried (either in a low oven, or fruit drier), the calyx is very high in vitamin C and makes a great herbal tea. The seed can be roasted and ground into flour.
Available from mid October.
