Oregano - True Greek
Origanum hirtum/heracleotcum
Oregano is a perennial herb, very similar to sweet marjoram with a distinct aroma and flavour. Leaves have a sharper flavour and can be used fresh or dried in Italian, Spanish and Mexican dishes, especially those with spaghetti and tomato. It is routinely paired with basil in these dishes as the two herbs complement each other perfectly. Oregano spreads rapidly given the right conditions so needs adequate space between plants. It can easily be divided in its second or third year to provide more plants. Refer to Cultural Information Table for more details. This type of oregano is thought to have the best flavour of all the oreganos. For propagation requirements refer to Cultural Information Table. Makes a beautifully scented ground cover too!
