Corsican Mint
Mentha requienii
Beautifully scented ground cover mint, which forms a dense, strongly scented mat of dark green tiny leaves. Prefers some shade, and a moist position but will do well when established. Spreads to cover a large area, and looks great as a lawn substitute. This peppermint scented plant is an excellent ground cover for moist/wet areas. Planted between pavers, in pathways and steps it can survive low light situations. Has purple/mauve flowers in summer, and reaches 1.5cm high. It can be safely walked on as a lawn substitute without killing it. This mint is unusual in that it remains non-invasive. It also has uses as a companion plant, along with Pennyroyal it is thought to be one of the best mints to grow with brassicas like broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower as it repels certain pest insects.

Sydney Inner West, West-facing garden on side street gets full sun noon-5pm all year.
This excellent little mint was doing fine after a slow but steady start in August 2010, but during renovations in January '11 it was shaded for a fortnight by plywood and died off completely. Three new ones have taken its place, but beware- it really hates the shade.
* even mints require some sunlight, they do best in dappled shade - full shade will kill them. (note from Four Seasons Herbs)
