Ocimum basilicum

An annual bush growing to 70cm tall. Dark Opal Basil has reddish-purple foliage. Attractive lavender flowers appear in summer. Pinch out tips to keep new leaves producing on compact, stocky plant. Basils in general thrive in the heat of summer, also having high water requirements. Feed weekly with an organic fertiliser to encourage lots of leafy growth. Tender leaves have a sweet, pungent smell when brushed. Colours vinegars red, flavours minestrone & tomato soups. An important asset of Dark Opal Basil is its ability to colour white wine vinegars a gorgeous pink/rose. Use it also to flavour soups, such as minestrone or fresh tomato, and makes a colourful and tasty addition to salads.
