It is hardy to cold but is frost tender. The flowers have both male and female organs, so is self pollinating. The plant prefers free draining sandy soil. The fruit is rich in saponins and can be used as a soap substitute. Requires moist soil. Needs a sunny position and will not tolerate too much shade. The leaves have insect repellant properties. This plant has many medicinal uses, especially in the Indian culture, but is relatively unknown in Western cultures. The plants contain the alkaloids withanine and somniferine which are used to treat nervous disorders, intestinal infections and leprosy. All parts of the plant are used including the roots, bark, leaves, flowers and fruit.
