Alexanders
Smyrnium olusatrum
A native of the Mediterranean, this biennial grows to about 1.2metres tall. Adds a celery flavour to soups, stews and other slow cooked dishes. An excellent addition to the kitchen garden. It is sometimes called Roman Celery, reflecting the fact that it was introduced by the Romans. It can be used as a vegetable, once it has produced good sized stalks. The yellow - green flower buds can be eaten raw or added to salads and have a pleasant, nutty taste.
