Loading... Please wait...Garlic is a very easy crop to grow, it takes 6-8 months before it is ready to harvest but homegrown garlic is definately worth the wait! The best time to plant garlic is a month or so before the cold weather really sets in. This gives the plant time to grow strong roots.
Over winter not alot happens, until spring when the bulbs start to fill out and develop. The bulbs continue to grow until the plant flowers or the foliage starts to brown and die off, which is when its ready to be harvested.
In addition, you can try planting some more in spring - everything else grows in spring so why not garlic!. It will grow but not the same size of the autumn planted ones.
Most of the garlic purchased in Australia is imported from China (and is bleached to improve its appearance as well as sprayed with growth retarding chemicals to increase the shelf life). Growing your own will ensure that you and your family are not consuming uneccessary chemicals and poisons, whilst also reducing the greenhouse emissions that would otherwise have occurred transporting it to Australia.
Naturally grown or organic produce, grown locally and in season is the best choice because transportation is minimised, inorganic fertilisers, fungicides and pesticides are not used (which are energy intensive to make), and there is minimal cold storage.
Garlic is one of the best value edible plants you can grow. Whilst it does have a relatively long growing time, it is very versatile in cooking, and its storage life is long enough to make it well worth while!
